“Canada’s push for diverse international students amid growing enrollment gaps.”

After coming to Canada in March and April of 2024, about 50,000 international students failed to register at their assigned colleges, according to a report released in January of this year. According to the data given by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada, these unenrolled students make up 6.9% of the 717,539 international students under observation at the time.

As a result, the Canadian government has encouraged universities to expand their enrolment of foreign students beyond India, which presently holds the record for the most study permits. 20,000 Indian students failed to attend their enrolled schools last year, compared to 3,902 Nigerian students. Among those missing were 2,712 students from Ghana as well. On the other hand, 23,514 students’ enrolment status was not recorded, while 89.8% (644,349) of the students were confirmed as enrolled. Some of these students are reportedly supporting themselves through low-paying employment, while others have been duped by dishonest educational institutions.

In order to solve these problems and guarantee a safer and more balanced intake of international students, the Canadian government has called for diversification. Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Marc Miller stated, “Universities and colleges need to put a little more effort into the price of acquisition and invest more in the talent that you’re bringing here, and that includes going to more countries and expanding your resources.””We expect the diversity of students,” he continued, “and I would say universities and colleges have been going to one or two source countries and constantly going back to the well on that.” Miller also made it clear that Canada will not be following President Donald Trump’s precise strategy when it comes to unauthorised immigration.

He did, however, issue a warning that students who lack legal status—including those whose post-graduate work permits (PGWPs) are about to expire—must depart the nation. “You must leave or you will be removed if you are here in an irregular manner and do not have the right to stay,” he said. The number of overseas students in Canada more than doubled, reaching over 640,000, between 2010 and 2019. Following the epidemic, the figure surpassed one million as Canada made a concerted effort to draw in foreign talent.

As it is, the government has tightened immigration laws due to the mounting strain on public services, healthcare, and housing. As a result, Canada introduced new regulations in January 2024 that placed restrictions on PGWPs and caps on study permits.
