Talks about Ukraine and relations between the US and Russia

Yesterday, top U.S. and Russian officials decided to work together on financial investment and the restoration of regular relations in addition to putting an end to the conflict in Ukraine. The two world powers engaged in their most thorough conversations in years.

Following three years of Western efforts to isolate Moscow for invading Ukraine in 2022—a strategy that has included sanctions and arms transfers to Ukraine—the meeting, which was held in Saudi Arabia, was a startling reset of the U.S.-Russian relationship. Additionally, President Trump has shown his readiness to put aside the concerns of his partners in Europe.

Speaking to reporters following the meeting, U.S. officials did not focus on the three years of destruction brought about by Russian shelling and bombardment, the war crimes Moscow has been accused of, or Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which violated international law. Rather, U.S. officials complimented Trump frequently for reaching out to Russia in a manner that former President Biden had not in an effort to halt the fighting.

What comes next: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the United States would discuss with Russia how to end the war with Ukraine, how to free their embassies in Washington and Moscow, and how to establish new business and geopolitical alliances. What else is on the table? Russia seemed to utilize the negotiations to satisfy Trump’s desire for natural resources and riches, claiming that doing business in Russia again would benefit American oil corporations and others by hundreds of billions of dollars.
